Mission & Values

Founded in 1881, AAUW (American Association of University Women) has championed gender equity in education and beyond for over 140 years. While nonpartisan, we are not values-neutral: we fight to remove the barriers and biases that stand in the way of gender equity.

Our Values

Intersectional

We recognize that gender equity intersects with race, class, disability, and other identities.

Inclusive

We welcome all who share our commitment to equity, inclusion, and diversity.

Intergenerational

We bridge generations to build a stronger movement for lasting change.

Empowering

We equip women and girls with the tools, training, and resources to thrive.

Strategic Priorities

AAUW’s strategic plan focuses on three priorities. Here’s how AAUW State College puts them into action locally.

1. Direct Funding & Empowerment

Provide direct funding for women in underserved communities and in fields where women are traditionally underrepresented, including STEM. Support international graduate study, develop the STEM pipeline, and cultivate fellowship networks.

What We Do Locally

  • Undergraduate Scholarships — Annual scholarships for women continuing their education at Penn State and other local institutions
  • STEM Mini-Grants — Grants of up to $500 to local organizations running STEM programs for girls and women
  • Community Action Grants — Funding for community projects that promote equity for women and girls in Centre County

2. Education & Advocacy

Champion legislation supporting women’s success in higher education, including pay equity, paid leave, and Title IX protections. Improve access to affordable, inclusive higher education and provide salary negotiation and financial literacy training.

What We Do Locally

  • Advocacy Network — Active engagement on education equity, economic security, women in leadership, diversity and inclusion, and reproductive rights
  • Non-Partisan Resources — Voter education and access to non-partisan civic information
  • Public Programs — Branch meetings, lectureships, and educational events throughout the year

3. Strengthening Local Impact

Build the movement through effective state and branch networks. Empower members to align with mission, strengthen financial sustainability, and create integrated infrastructure for long-term success.
