Member Making a Difference

This award honors a member who made a big difference in something important to AAUW State College within the past year. The recipient exemplifies the spirit of AAUW and need not be a branch officer or committee chair.

2026 — Gail Agans

Gail has distinguished herself in her first year as the Financial Officer of our C-3 incorporation. Assuming the mantle of Financial Officer of an active organization with a fundraising event involving tens of thousands of dollars is a huge challenge. Gail has accepted this challenge without missing a step, mastering branch financial procedures, policies, and processes and identifying areas when improvements might be possible. She has made our branch better. She exemplifies the spirit of AAUW State College through her participation in branch programs and activities.

2026 — Candace Davison

Candace, a longtime member of the branch, has provided strategic leadership and collaboration as she performed the roles of co-President and co-Membership VP. She continued that leadership by helping to found and nurture the original STEM Committee and guide its outreach to girls in the community. With her scientific background and expertise, Candace is a great role model to young women interested in STEM. She now leads the Past-Presidents Council, a newly formed group to provide knowledge, assistance, and back-up for the current President and committee chairs while also editing our branch handbook/directory and supporting our branch website. Candace can always be counted on to get the job done, no matter what the request is.

National Recognition

AAUW Five Star Recognition Badge

AAUW Five Star National Recognition Program

AAUW State College has received Five Star Recognition from AAUW national for the 2024–2025 year — one of a select few branches nationwide to earn this designation.

The Five Star National Recognition Program celebrates AAUW branches and states that advance AAUW’s mission and demonstrate excellence across five key areas of impact:

  • Advancement: Supporting AAUW’s mission through fundraising, membership growth, and donor engagement to sustain programs that advance equity for women and girls.
  • Communications and External Relations: Effectively sharing AAUW’s story, engaging the public, and building visibility for the branch through newsletters, websites, social media, and community outreach.
  • Programs: Offering mission-driven programming that addresses issues affecting women and girls, including educational events, community partnerships, and leadership development.
  • Public Policy and Research: Advocating for policies that promote gender equity, engaging members in advocacy campaigns, and using AAUW research to inform action at the local, state, and national levels.
  • Governance and Sustainability: Maintaining strong organizational practices, developing future leaders, ensuring inclusive governance, and planning for the long-term health of the branch.

Branches earn stars by meeting specific benchmarks within each area during the program year. Achieving all five stars demonstrates that a branch is thriving across every dimension of AAUW’s work — from grassroots advocacy to financial sustainability.

Centre Region Recognition

Mid-State Literacy Council

Ruth C. Kistler Service Award

In appreciation of our continued leadership supporting literacy for women, the Mid-State Literacy Council Board of Directors voted in February 2020 to award AAUW State College with The Ruth C. Kistler Service Award, the highest award honoring contributions to literacy in our community. Ruth Kistler founded the Mid-State Literacy Council in 1971 to bring literacy in all forms to adults in Centre and Clearfield Counties.

CCRRA Green Community Partner Award

Green Community Partner Award (2024)

AAUW State College was recognized as a 2024 Green Community Partner by the Centre County Recycling and Refuse Authority (CCRRA). This biennial award recognizes local organizations that demonstrate leadership in recycling, reuse, and environmental sustainability. Our branch earned the recognition through the annual Used Book Sale, which collects, sorts, and redistributes tens of thousands of donated books each year — diverting significant waste from landfills while promoting literacy and raising funds for scholarships and community programs.
