AAUW’s Nationwide women’s advocacy network opens doors for women and girls and influences public debate on critical social issues such as education, civil rights, and workplace equity.
AAUW publishes groundbreaking research on women and girls, is one of the world’s largest resources of funding exclusively for graduate women, and fights sex discrimination in all levels of education.
The State College branch of AAUW was founded in 1916 and has approximately 150 members who continually seek ways to work toward improving the lives of all women. Our State College branch has a long history of leadership and community service.
Half a Century of Expanding Access to Education
With 37 words, Congress changed the face of education. Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 states: “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”
50 years ago, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 changed the face of education. This groundbreaking civil rights law prohibits sex discrimination in education and protects people of all genders, both staff and students, in any educational institution or program receiving federal funds. Title IX ushered in an era of enormous progress for girls and women from classrooms to playing fields, but advocates continue to fight efforts to weaken it. Join AAUW as we honor five decades of advancing educational equity for all and engage where advocacy is still needed to achieve the full promise of Title IX.
A gap exists at all levels of work in almost every occupation. There is a gender pay gap in every state. It cuts across all age groups and demographics, significantly for women of color. The gap greets a woman as soon as she gets out of college and grows wider …
Women still lag far behind men when it comes to leadership roles. They remain significantly under-represented at the highest rungs of almost every field: corporate, government, nonprofit, education, law, medicine, finance and banking, and the military.
From preschool through high school, most children encounter some degree of “gender tracking,” stereotypes, and expectations that can set them on a lifelong path. Tracking in early education helps account for why so many professional women are still making less.
AAUW State College is committed to promoting interest and achievement among girls and women in the STEM areas—science, technology, engineering, and math. We are actively involved in several local STEM initiatives. In conjunction with Centre County school districts, AAUW State College co-sponsors multi-week after-school programs with a STEM focus. We also award grants to local organizations, schools, and groups that propose STEM programs that will positively impact Centre County girls or women.
The purpose of AAUW is to advance equity for women and girls through adovocacy, education, and research. The AAUW State College branch presents educational scholarships to deserving women each year. The purpose of these scholarships is to support women who, at some point, have interrupted thier undergraduate studies for at least two years and who wish to resume or continue their studies at this time.
AAUW’s mission is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. AAUW State College awards numerous community grants each year to nonprofits located within Centre County that promote our mission. We believe that collaborative community-based initiatives form a robust foundation for advancing equity locally and, ultimately, globally.
