Education and Outreach
Public Policy
The Public Policy Committee works to actively support AAUW's Public Policy Priorities for 2008-2009; a strong system of quality public education that promotes gender fairness, equity and diversity; achievement of women's economic self-sufficiency; and equality, individual rights and social justice for a diverse society. The committee monitors pending legislation and encourages member participation through the newsletter, meeting presentations and electronic mail. The committee works collaboratively with community and regional groups on voter registration, equitable funding of Pennsylvania's public schools, local and national public issues forums, and domestic and sexual violence issues.
AAUW has a long history of working for women's issues. Nationally, we continue to support women
who are not receiving fair treatment, through the Legal Advocacy Fund. On the local level, we offer
programs related to pay equity, support for school funding, and access to higher education. During
2008, State College Branch supported the Women Vote campaign, including working to increase the number
of women registered to vote, followed by an effort to get women (and others) to cast their ballot.
Public Policy allows us to be involved with issues at the local, state, and national levels. Members
are encouraged to take action by contacting state and national representatives, and to contact local
leaders about issues of importance.
